"A story of an hour"
This story was very detailed when Louise was up stairs looking out the window. She took the time to think about her life and how long and joyious it would be to live for herself.
"She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome." She stared off into the sky while pondering of the life ahead.
I think that the social issue here was that married woman feel that they do not have time for themselves and they feel that they are not living life fully for themselves and this particular time period. I think that the Arthur was really trying to grab husbands attention with this story.
"Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own. She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long."
"The battle with Mr. Covey"
This story also had many details about how Freddrick was treated wrong."He came to the spot, and after looking at me awhile, asked me what was the matter. I told him as well as I could, for I scarce had strength to speak. He then gave me a savage kick in the side, and told me to get up."
He had been through woods briers and bushes with a huge wound on his head from a big blow from Mr. Covey but yet his master still had him go back with the assurance that Mr. Covey was a good man and had no intetion of killing him with no doubt in mind that he would. He was broken into a slave with only one day of Leisure time on a Sunday which he spent sleeping under a tree like a brute.
The way I seen the social point of this story was that slavery is bad, and should not be permitted. "Master Thomas ridiculed the idea that there was any danger of Mr. Covey's killing me" I seen that slaves wont take too much for too long also in the story."But whilst thus engaged, whilst in the act of throwing down some blades from the loft, Mr. Covey entered the stable with a long rope; and just as I was half way out of the loft, he caught hold of my legs, and was about tying me. As soon as I found what he was up to, I gave a sudden spring, and as I did so, he holding to my legs, I was brought sprawling on the stable floor. Mr. Covey seemed now to think he had me," this was a good story for some reason i really got into it.
To me realism is something that is very important in life in order to know what is going on. I have my own example of realism which is some lyrics from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five these lyrics come from a song called the message which was around when Hip Hop first started and talked alot about what was going on the hoods they were coming which is still done today.
The Message

Dark Romantics'
1. If i thought of the difference between the dark romantics and the transcendentalist and which side would I fall under. It would have to be the transcendenatlist not to say the dark romantics are totally wrong but I think that when you are born you are not evil from the beganing. The way I look at it is that you may acquire some not so good traits or maybe nobody knows that persons situation, because you never really know what you might do until you're faced with that same problem. Just like with Melville not to say that I would eat people but you never know what those people were going through.
2. I read the story of the Black Cat. I thouht it was very interesting because this crazy guy just gave his beloved wife the axe and put her in the wall. but it seemed as if he went from a small problem like hurting animals which he loved (as a kid), to hanging Pluto (his favorite pet) afterwards he gets another cat which he can abuse, and then he finally caps it off with his wife. I think the story shows that evil knows no stopping point and anyone can succomb to its mighty influence. this was a great example because he was an alcholic who just didn't having any will power whatsoever.
"hung it with the tears streaming from my eyes, and with the bitterest remorse at my heart; -- hung it because I knew that it had loved me, and because I felt it had given me no reason of offence; -- hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin -- a deadly sin that would so jeopardize my immortal soul as to place it -- if such a thing were possible -- even beyond the reach of the infinite mercy of the Most Merciful and Most Terrible God." This shows just how crazy this guy was, why was he so sorry after the fact that he cut Pluto's eye out and then he goes and hangs him but yet he feels sorry once more.
3.Alot of lines in this poem caught my attention. The first one that really stuck out to me was the part where he firsts opens the window to see who was tapping on it to find that it's nobody. And then he hears the name "Lenore". Then he hears the tapping again and opens the window and this bird flies in. Then he asks for the birds name and he say's nevermore.
"But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke onlyThat one word, as if its soul in that one word he did outpourNothing farther then he uttered; not a feather then he fluttered--Till I scarcely more than muttered: "Other friends have flown before--On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before."Then the bird said "Nevermore."
to me this shows how Poe was scared of being left. When he said take thou beak from thou heart I think he meant that he wasn't ready to face the truth that his Lenore was not coming back. I don't know if the bird was a demon or just his imagination toying with him but this is a great example of Dark Romanticisim because it shows that the human intution isn't always the most beautiful thing or spoken directly from god. I think that this story was actually about the writer and things that where probably really playing through in his head.

transcendentalism
Transcendentalism
NATURE
I think that “Nature” is trying to say that if you’re intone with the earth than it’s basically like be close enough to hear and communicate with god. To me Emerson was just trying to get people to pay closer attention to the earth without taking granted or overlooking the sings of god. Just like in the book when it said “If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore”. I think that meant like if the Stars didn’t come but every thousand years or so that when it actually did men would be astonished and amazed to see such a thing so make sure you cherish the times that you have with nature. He also said “the illuminates in the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child”. What that meant to me was that when you’re intoning with nature you must look at it from a child’s perspective.
This was a good example if transcendentalism because it shows that you have to use your mind sometimes in different ways to seek the greatness of life. Just like how the transcendentalist thought of the human mind as being the most powerful tool you have.
SELF-RELIANCE
With Self-Reliance I think the point here was to rely on your self for greatness. Right off the back I noticed when he said “envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion;. I got from this just be yourself that’s all you need. I also got that God only works through a man who is divine and can think for himself. Just trust your self and be happy and gay with what you do nobody knows what you can do but you.
This is also a great example because once again it has something to do with the betterment of a human as an individual with individual thoughts. They believed that the individual mind was connected to the oversoul.
RESISTANCE TO CIVIL GOVERNMENT
The Transcendentalists didn't believe in having a government. They believed that if a person was actually in touch and could become intone with their surroundings, they could uplift physical and man-made things to connect with God. Therefore if you were a person who could listen to and understand nature then you were more like or closer to god and you wouldn’t need a government because you would already have total order yourself hence Self-Reliance. Just like from the Henry David Thoreau’s text “There will never really be a free and enlighten State, until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly”. From this text I realized that he was saying that the government should realize that we our at our greatest power as individuals who can think and coup with our own powerful human minds.
In the wilderness video dick was in a one man wilderness all alone just with nature. He was intoning with nature for 35years. And that’s what made this video such a great example of transcendentalism because he could do good in nature while relying on his own brain and thoughts to get him through long lonely harsh cold winters.

Romanticisim
RIP VAN WINKLE
In the story of Rip Van Winkle I think it was romantic the way that everyone and his neighbor hood like him the women like him, he told stories to the kids, and not even one dog would bark at him. “The children of the village, too, would shout with joy whenever he approached. He assisted at their sports, made their playthings, taught them to fly kites
And shoot marbles, and told them long stories of ghosts, witches, and Indians.”
It was also romantic the why he left his wife for some alone time and then he ended up falling asleep for twenty years. “His eyes swam in his head, his head gradually declined, and he fell into a deep sleep. On waking, he found himself on the green knoll whence he had first seen the old man of the glen. He rubbed his eyes—it was a bright sunny morning. The birds were hopping and twittering among the bushes, and the
Eagle was wheeling aloft, and breasting the pure mountain breeze.
“Surely,” thought Rip, “I have not slept here all night.” This story has many unbelievable type things going on that makes the story Romantic.
THANATOPSIS
I think that this poem is basically stating that dying shouldn’t be looked at as a horrible thing. Like at one point he said that if you can enjoy a spot where no one is physically around than you can be intoned with the people who once where there. He also said that when you die you’re becoming one with nature and you will be accompanied by everyone who died even the kings, heroes, queens, and wise men. The main romantic part of the story to me is when nature is talking to the reader about becoming one with the elements.
ROPEWALK
I think that the Arthur of this story was trying to really elaborate on imagination with this poem. Its seems as if he’s saying that using your imagination can be good by getting you away from the real world sometimes and into your own happiness. That’s what makes this poem romantic knowing that you can have something else to lean on when life gets you down. The guy in the poem was in a rope factory and to get his mind of his work he day dreamed about lots of different things that could be done with the rope his imagination was a big part and that’s what the romantics were based on.
I think that this picture is romantic because it has a evil setting to me. With the reddish looking background it kind of makes me think of blood and death. The trees have no leaves and I see no sign of life and this picture the water looks like its drying out also.

Rationalist
Rationalists
The Rationalist was very different from the Puritans. The Puritans thought of god as a tyrant who made everything and meant for it to stay the way it was, while the Puritans thought that God did make everything also but he wanted to leave it up to people to find out how its was operated. The Rationalist stated that all people were owed certain rights while the Puritans wanted certain people to have them. Just like now and days we have a recession the Puritans would probably say that it was God punishing all the sinners, but the Rationalist would say that it has been many mistakes throughout time that has led to it.
Benjamin Franklin made for a good Rationalist because he always tried to challenge nature with science. The way he looked at life was like he god gave humans brains and it was up to them to use them correctly. He had a thin line between religion and self in betterment. Benjamin also said that “men should be taught as if you taught them not, and things unknown proposed as things forgot”. Basically the tie between Benjamin and the Rationalists is that they didn’t put things on god when they didn’t know the answer to something they used their brains and wit to figure it out.
1. Treat others how you want to be treated.
2. When you fall down get back up and try it again.
3. Dare to be different.
4. Turn the other cheek.
5. Be willing to give a helping hand when needed.
6. Put love before hate.
7. Don’t participate in tearing down others with rumors and he say she say.
8. Encourage the depressed and the underachievers.
9. Worry not about what you can’t but what you can do.
10. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
11. Don’t use foul words to come across a point.
12. Keep your head up.
13. Try to resolve your problems with dialogue instead of with your physical attributes.
I think I could reach moral perfection by following this list because these are all essential things that I need to work on. I have a temper problem at times and I tend to resort to violence instead of trying to let things go or even talk things out. I also worry to much about what I can’t do and I lose sight of any of the good things I can do so I basically give up. Sometimes I see people that may need help but I sometimes don’t know how to approach them about doing so or I just don’t want to get and others people business. If I work on these things and get them right I still wouldn’t be perfect but I would definitely be a better person for it.

The Puritans
The Puritans
The Puritans were god fearing people literally. They thought that God did not die for the salvation of all just a selected few who could interpret his word. They also said that God's mercy couldn't be earned nor dismissed it was basically just pre determined. Through Adam and Eve all people were born sinful and there was nothing they could do about it.
I think that these people lived in fear knowing that at any point in time they could just fall into hell if god felt like it. They thought that the only thing between them and hell was god’s mere hand holding them up. They probably tried to make careful decisions about what they did since they were always making him angrier with everything they did. God did not even won’t to look at these people let alone have them in his house.
These people were born sinners and they followed these so called saints who at some points I think added things to gods word to make there selves look better. They made it hard for the Natives to be there selves and there own native land they set a particular treaty that I thought was very cruel and unfair. I think that these people were very judgmental and they thought that they were superior in means like they thought them knowing god would give them the right to guide others.
After the Puritans got off the Mayflower they were so glad that they made it to their destination safely. They didn’t even realize that their no houses to live in no roads no anything so they relied on god once again to assist them in getting their own civilization started.
They thought that only by the will of god they could succeed.
The Puritans learned as they went along they took things that they didn’t really know and switch it around. To me I think that the Puritans never really knew what they were talking about because they were just making up stuff the whole time. They were so in love with god but the way I look at it they were more say doing devilish things. Like they way they treated the Natives it was ungodly like.
