The Puritans were god fearing people literaly. they thought that God did not die for the salvation of all just a selected few who could interpret his word. They also said that God's mercy couldn't be earned nor dismissed it was basically just pre determained. Through Adam and Eve all people were born sinful and there was nothing they could do about it.
