1. If i thought of the difference between the dark romantics and the transcendentalist and which side would I fall under. It would have to be the transcendenatlist not to say the dark romantics are totally wrong but I think that when you are born you are not evil from the beganing. The way I look at it is that you may acquire some not so good traits or maybe nobody knows that persons situation, because you never really know what you might do until you're faced with that same problem. Just like with Melville not to say that I would eat people but you never know what those people were going through.
2. I read the story of the Black Cat. I thouht it was very interesting because this crazy guy just gave his beloved wife the axe and put her in the wall. but it seemed as if he went from a small problem like hurting animals which he loved (as a kid), to hanging Pluto (his favorite pet) afterwards he gets another cat which he can abuse, and then he finally caps it off with his wife. I think the story shows that evil knows no stopping point and anyone can succomb to its mighty influence. this was a great example because he was an alcholic who just didn't having any will power whatsoever.
"hung it with the tears streaming from my eyes, and with the bitterest remorse at my heart; -- hung it because I knew that it had loved me, and because I felt it had given me no reason of offence; -- hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin -- a deadly sin that would so jeopardize my immortal soul as to place it -- if such a thing were possible -- even beyond the reach of the infinite mercy of the Most Merciful and Most Terrible God." This shows just how crazy this guy was, why was he so sorry after the fact that he cut Pluto's eye out and then he goes and hangs him but yet he feels sorry once more.
3.Alot of lines in this poem caught my attention. The first one that really stuck out to me was the part where he firsts opens the window to see who was tapping on it to find that it's nobody. And then he hears the name "Lenore". Then he hears the tapping again and opens the window and this bird flies in. Then he asks for the birds name and he say's nevermore.
"But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke onlyThat one word, as if its soul in that one word he did outpourNothing farther then he uttered; not a feather then he fluttered--Till I scarcely more than muttered: "Other friends have flown before--On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before."Then the bird said "Nevermore."
to me this shows how Poe was scared of being left. When he said take thou beak from thou heart I think he meant that he wasn't ready to face the truth that his Lenore was not coming back. I don't know if the bird was a demon or just his imagination toying with him but this is a great example of Dark Romanticisim because it shows that the human intution isn't always the most beautiful thing or spoken directly from god. I think that this story was actually about the writer and things that where probably really playing through in his head.
